Interviewer: Karl Hungus
Date of Interview: 10/3/2007
I love my job. That's probably a given, because "fetish writer" isn't a vocation one stumbles into, like HVAC or Retail. One of the things I love most about living in the fetish world, is interviewing the very yummy women I write about. That's a nice perk. One of my favorite fetish models is January Seraph, a relative newcomer, and an absolute dreamboat. Of course that's my professional opinion. ;)
I'm sitting at my desk, sipping coffee, The White Stripes Icky Thump-ing in my ears. I am pouring over oodles of fetish sites, for my Quips & Chains Fetish Blog. I have pretty free rein over the content of my blog, for which I am grateful. Freedom is always important, but it's extra yummy for a writer. Ask any writer what they hate to do most of all, and they'll all say "writing an assignment with a deadline." We writers, professional writers, are an ornery group. We are the obstinate donkeys in the barnyard of art. Writing is what we do, who we are, what we live for, and yet... I'd rather cut my grass or clean the litterbox, than write on cue. It's the artistic temperament. It's why journalists, the biggies, the legends, are almost universally considered difficult.
When I started with Social Kink, January Seraph was the first model I approached for an interview. Due to scheduling conflicts and the vagaries of life, her interview is being posted now. I came into work one happy morning, and was delighted to see this email in my inbox. It was from January.
"OK! I did it! Sorry it took me so long, I know it wasn't a
momentous task, I've just been chipping away at it slowly...
Thanks again for taking an interest in me, I really don't think I'm
quite as interesting as you make me out to be, but I'm very
flattered by the attention."
And now (drumroll) the January Seraph Social Kink Interview.
Your range is incredible, from corsets, to gas masks, from fairies,
to shibari, all with a glamour that is beguiling. When you started
did you intend on pushing the boundaries of fetish modeling, or
has that just evolved?
Pushing boundaries has never really been a motivating force behind
the shoots that I do. Mainly, I just like to shoot things that
interest me, and my interests are really quite varied. I grew up
riding horses competitively; so I think the next thing that I would
really like to shoot will be a pony fetish.
You've made quite a splash, arriving on the scene earlier this
year. Is there any one thing (shoot/event/photographer) that stands
out as noteworthy?
Actually, yes. I just finished acting in my first film, "The Ivy
Manor 5" for Gwen Media. At one point while we were filming I turned
to the director, John Fitzgerald and said, "This is officially the
weirdest thing I have ever done". I don't want to ruin the surprise
so I'm not going to elaborate. :-)
You say you're not looking to be a pornstar. Does your affiliation
w/ Gwen Media mean that you might be persuaded?
I suppose my stance on porn is evolving, and to have previously made
a blanket statement like that was probably short sighted. My main
objection is that the majority of mainstream porn is so low end,
boring and to me, distasteful. There are, however a handful of
really talented directors who make incredibly artful, beautiful, and
erotic films that I love to watch and would consider being part of
were they to ask.
Who were/are your role models, as you ascend the ladder of fetish
success? Is there anyone who you model yourself after, either
business-wise, or artistically?
That's a hard one, because there are so many inspiring women (Kumi, Darenzia, Miss Conduct) that I
look up to for so many different reasons. There are aspects of each
of the top model's careers that I admire and hope to fashion my own
career to mimic in different ways.
What is the business end of this like for a solo artist? Your
website looks fantastic, and it's loaded with content. Are you
doing it all yourself?
You have to be firm yet not bitchy, tough, yet not alienate yourself
from people. I'm glad you like my site, I've put a lot of work into
it. While I've done a lot of it myself, I did elect to have someone
help me with the more technical aspects of it.
You've joined a long line of smart women, who control their image,
and their art. The Fetish/Glamor/Pin Up girl has really broken
through into the mainstream. How's it feel to in the same league,
professionally, and sociologically, as Darenzia, Kumi, Hell Kitten,
etc?
Wow, those are some pretty amazing women that you just mentioned, and
I'm very flattered that you would include me in that lot! While I
definitely aspire to be in the same league as Darenzia, Kumi, Miss
Conduct, and their colleagues I honestly don't think that I'm
there...yet. But I think with a little more time I might be.
What can we expect from you in the future?
In addition to more exciting, quality kink? I'm currently studying
for my real estate license, and am going to be trying to get into
more mainstream acting roles.
Are you reading anything right now, and if so what?
Sarah, by JT Leroy, and California Real Estate Principles
Do you have any advice for women who want to follow in your
footsteps? Are there any pitfalls?
Always read your contracts. Never do anything you are uncomfortable
with. Never expand your boundaries for money. Expand them if it's
something you feel ok doing, but not if money is the key motivating
factor. Are there any pitfalls? For me I have trouble balancing
the real me vs the alter ego I promote...the lines get a little
blurry in certain situations. But it's nothing too out of control :-)
Plug whatever you want here. Whatever editing I do, I'll keep
whatever you're promoting.
Check out my site at www.januaryseraph.com if you get a chance! (She also has a Social Kink Profile right here.)
I, Karl Hungus, the Nostradamus of Naughty, predicts big things from January Seraph. I can't wait for that pony fetish shoot. ;)
